Without question, Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine
features the highest profile board of editors among the competition
(both print and online). All are world-class investigator/clinicians.
Each editor meticulously edits every chapter and two editors read
overlapping chapters. The usual rotation of editors results in Dennis
Kasper (the infectious disease editor) as editor-in-chief for this
edition. An exception has been made to the retirement policy so that
Dr. Braunwald will stay on the project for one last edition. Dr.
Braunwald brings to the book tremendous creative energy, wide knowledge
of all areas of medicine and incomparable institutional memory. He will
also a key player at all the editorial meetings and will help shape the
overall direction for this new edition. Dr. Anthony Fauci is one of the
most visible medical names in the world through this past work in the
AIDS field and current role in the fight against bioterrorism.

This is the "digital edition," which includes the hefty printed volume,
access to the "e-supplement," a life-of-print-edition subscription to
Harrison's Online, and support for handheld devices. The 15th edition
of Harrison's is cited by Brandon/Hill as both an "initial purchase"
and as part of a "minimal core collection." New to the 16th edition of
this substantial work is a heightened focus on clinical practice, with
emphasis given to the approach to the patient, differential diagnosis,
treatment options, and disease prevention. Some topics are new or
receive expanded treatment, including the immune system and HIV/AIDS,
stem cell and gene transfer in clinical medicine, radiation therapy,
    Clostridium difficile-associated disease, bioterrorism, disease
screening, perimenopausal management, hormone replacement therapy,
end-of-life care, and a new multi-chapter section on critical care
medicine. Of the staggering 379 chapters, 46 are new or by new authors,
and the remainder have been revised. The new edition also features
color illustration throughout rather than the additional color atlas of
earlier editions. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland
